Summary of Modern Studies on Lung & Bronchial Pacifier (Jinqiao Qingfei) Capsule

Chinese Uses: cough, asthma, chronic bronchitis, upper respiratory infections

This product is applied for cough after common cold and lingering chest pain, cough-panting due to the lung blocked with heat-phlegm. The treating principle is clearing heat, resolving phlegm, ventilating the lung to stop coughing.
Among the ingredients, Herba Houttuyalae clears heat, detoxifies, arrests pain, and expels pus. It pertains to the lung channel and is conversant with clearing the lung, and is the main medicine for lung blocked by heat-phlegm, developing into lung abscess. Rhizoma Pagopyri is bitter-plain and also pertains to the lung channel. It clears heat, detoxifies, clears the lung, resolves phlegm. The above 2 ingredients are used as the main monarchal ingredients. Folium Ilcis chinensis is bitter-puckery, and heat, detoxifies, cools blood and stops bleeding, astringes ulcer, and strengthens the action of the main ingredients to ventilate the lung and stop coughing. Herba Ephedrae is pungent, and bitter-warm. It communicates, with actions of ventilating the lung and arresting panting. Radix Peucedani descends the qi, resolves phlegm, disperses wind-heat. Since it is bitter, pungent and cold with pertinence to the lung channel, it is applied for the lung blocked by hot phlegm and failure of lung-qi to descend. Radix Asteris is pungent-sweet-bitter and warm, pertains to the lung channel. It moistens the lung, resolves phlegm, arrests coughing. Its sweet, moistened, bitter and reducing, pungent warm but not dry, is conversant with moistening the lung and arresting panting, opens blockade in the lung, it is capable of moistening the lung, resolving phlegm, arresting cough. The coordinated use of Radix Ephedrae, Radix Asteris is both ascending and descending, and can ventilate the lung, expel pathogens, then the lung can be pacified. It is applied with Folium Ilicis as adjuvant ingredients. Fructus Aurantii is bitter, pungent, cold, and pertains to the spleen-stomach-large intestine, so it is conversant with activating qi-circulation, eliminating stuffiness. Since the large intestine is corresponding with the lung, hence, it helps to strengthen the ventilation of the lung. Radix Glycyrrhiza is pertaining to the lung-spleen-stomach channels. It is capable of clearing heat, detoxifying, benefiting qi, expelling sputum, arresting coughing and arresting pain. Radix Glycyrrhiza is sweet and plain, pertains to the heart-lung-spleen-stomach channels. It clear heat, detoxifies, benefiting qi, replenishes the interior, eliminates phlegm, arrests cough, arrests pain, and adjusts and harmonizes all ingredients. In summary, the whole product is pungent and bitter, capable of ventilating and descending, both cold and warm. It clear heat, resolves phlegm, ventilates the lung and arrests coughing.

Modern studies in pharmacology reveal that Herba Houttuyalae yields anti-pathogen action. Its decoction yields different degrees of bacteriostatic action on staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pneumoniae, gram positive and negative bacteria. It also strengthens the immunity of organism, huttouyalin, markedly increases the leucocytic phagocytosis to staphylococcus album. Rhizoma Pagopyri cymosi contains double poly-cyanin which yields anti-inflammation, bacteriostatic, antitussive and arresting coughing actions. The Radix Ephedrae, Radix Peucedani, Radix Glycyrrhiza in this product stop coughing, expel phlegm. Solution of Ephedrae yields marked antibechic effect to bronchitis in guinea pig due to mechanical stimulation, being equivalent to 1/20 of codeine phosphate. Concentrated decoction of Radix Asteris with asterone possesses phlegm-expelling effect. Radix Ephedrae yields persistent anti-spasmodic action on bronchus smooth muscles, especially effective for bronchial spasm.

Clinically, it was applied in URI, acute and chronic bronchitis, lung abscess.

1. Upper respiratory infection: this product yielded relief for cough of wind heat type, fever, averse to wind, coughing with yellow sputum.
2. Acute and chronic bronchitis: it cured lung blocked by phlegmatic heat, stuffy chest due to acute and chronic bronchitis.

Lung abscess: effective for coughing with purulent phlegm, fever, thoracalgia due to lung abscess and bronchiectasis.
