Summary of modern studies on Sanqi Zhixue (StopBleeding™) Capsule

 

Chinese Use: Internal and external hemorrhage, bleeding.

 

This product is applied in all sorts of bleeding, internal or external. The treating principle is hemostasis, eliminating static blood, eliminating necrosis and regeneration.

In this recipe, Radix Notoginseng in bitter-warm, pertains to the liver-spleen channels, capable of arresting bleeding and dispersing static blood. It also activates blood, resolving static blood to arrest pain and swelling, being an important drug in traumatology. It is applied as main (monarchal) ingredient. Resina Draconis is capable of dispersing stasis to arrest pain, astringing ulcer and arresting hemorrhage. Catech is capable of stimulating regeneration, healing    sores; Olibanum and Myrrha are all capable of activating blood and Qi, and arresting pain, relieving swelling and promoting granulation. Radix Arnebiae seu lithospermi is sweet-cold, capable of cooling blood and activating blood flow. All the above are used as ministerial ingredients. Calcinated Os Draconis is an astringent with acerbity nature. When concerted with pearl, its granulation and eliminating necrosis action are strengthened. Colla Cornus cervi is sweet-salty and warm, capable of warmly benefit the liver and kidney, nourishing semen and replenishing blood. Radix Astragali benefit Qi and ascends Yang, and supports ulcer to propagate and regenerate. Both are used to nourish blood and Qi, so as to renew the blood flowing. Rhizoma Corydalis is pungent-bitter-warm, capable of “activating the stagnated Qi in the blood, and stagnated blood in the Qi”, and is an excellent pain-relieving agent. Pippermint is a pain reliever. The comprehensive action of the recipe is eliminating stasis, arresting pain, aiming at dredging the channel to stop pain. It also eliminates necrotic tissue, promotes granulation. Thus, the blood flows smoothly and doesn’t extravasate, hence, bleeding stops.

 

Modern studies on pharmacodynamics show that the Radix Notoginseng  possesses hemostatic action. When its powder is perfused to the anesthetized dog, the blood coagulation and prothrombin time are shortened. When its solution is perfused to mice, the bleeding and coagulation time are shortened. Olibanum lowers the plasma viscosity of normal person in in vitro experiment, with analgesic action. Rhizoma Corydalis is an analgetic, the corydaline A, B perform analgesic effect in rat, mice and rabbit. It produces drug resistance, anyway, without forming addiction. There is a cross resistance between it and morphine. Pearl promotes granulation in wounds. When applied topically, the granulation time of the open infected wound in rabbit can be markedly shortened. As compared with the control group, there are more fibroblasts and capillary vessels, with more active division process and more plasma cell and macrophages. Peppermint regulates vessel function in local parts. When applied onto the body surface or mucous membrane, the volatile oil makes the vessels to constract. It may also infiltrates into the skin, causing long congestion and causing changes in the deep vessel tissue to regulate the function of blood vessel. These ingredients work together to yield stop bleeding, analgesic and granulation actions.
