Summary of Modern Studies on Huanglian Qingwei (Sweet Breath & Healthy Gum^™)Capsule

 

Chinese Use: Gingivitis, paradentitis, parulis, stomatitis, glossitis, fever in children, acne, cholecystitis, bacillary dysentery.

 

Modern studies on pharmacodynamical reveal that this product yields actions of bacteriostasis, anti-inflammation, Sedation, analgesia, hemostasis and improving phagocytosis of macrophage.

 

1.      Bacteriostasis: The Decoction of this product yields action on inhibiting staphylococcus aureus, pseudomonas aeruginosa, but the action is not so strong.

2.      Improving the phagocytosis of macrophage: 5% solution of this product is administered to mice through gastric perfusion 0.5ml/mouse, once daily foe 3 successive days. The phagocytosis of abdominal macrophage is markedly strengthened, with marked increase of phagocytic percentage and index, demonstrating that the therapeutic action of this product may not be its direct action, rather, it may be attributed to the effect of strengthening the organic specific immunity.

3.      Anti-inflammation: (1)Inhibition of tissue inflammation and granulation: By injecting 5% solution of this product 10ml/kg into the abdomen b.i.d. for 3 consecutive days, marked inhibition on claw inflammation induced by albumen in rat. Granulation induced by paper-piece method, q.d. administered by abdominal injection of 5% of solution of this product 10ml/kg q.d. in rat for 7 successive days, the formation of granulation is markedly inhibited. (2)Radix Angelica Sinensis and Cortex Moutau radicis all yield anti-inflammatory action when used individually.

4.      Sedation, analgesia: Radix Angelica senensis and Rhizoma Cimicifugae all yield sedative and analgesic effect when applied individually.

5.      Hemostasis: Radix Rehmanniae improves blood congulation, Rhizoma Cimicifugae markedly shortens the coagulation time.

 

Toxicological studies: 10 mice weighing 18~20g are perfused gastrically with 100%. Decoction of this product 0.4ml/mouse. Observations is made for 3 days, with no fatal mouse found. The quantity given is 150 times that of each kg of body weight in normal adult.

 

Clinically, this product was used in gingivitis, periodontitis, gingival abscess, stomatitis, glossitis, infantile fever, swelling of lips in infant, acne, cholecystitis, bacillary dysentery.

 

1.                       Diseases of the mouth and teeth: (1) Acute gingivitis, periodontitis: 103 cases of acute gingivitis were treated with this product plus Yunu Decoction; 94 cases were cured; 9 cases were markedly effective. 56 cases of acute periodontitis with this product, the total effective rate being 98.2%. (2) Stubborn stomatitis: 75 cases were treated with this product with additives. All cases were cured. With 3~9 doses, generally 6 doses; 86 cases were treated with this product with additive, with 6 days constituting a therapeutic course. Generally 1~2 courses were administered, during which all other medication are interrupted. 73 cases were cured, 12 markedly effective, 1 case ineffective, the total effective rate being 98.8%. (3) Recurrent aphthae stomatitis: 56 cases were treated with this product plus additives. 31 cases were markedly effective; 18 cases effective; the total effective rate being 87.5%. (4) Gingivitis and mucous membrane inflammation: 21 cases of periapical inflammation were treated with this product plus Flos Lonicerae, Herba Taraxaci. 17 cases were cured; 4 cases, markedly effective. For serous type, the disorder can be readily cured, while for pyogenic type, it also healed without pyogenation. 40 cases of acute periodontits were treated with this product with additives, 27 cases were cured; 12 cases, effective; 1 case, ineffective. (5)Herpetic Pharyngitis: 192 cases were treated with this product with additives. All cases were cured.

2.                       Infantile fever and swelling of the lips: 60 cases were treated with this product, with analgin and injection of Radix Bupleuri as control. Result showed that 60 cases in the treatment group, 37 cases were cured; 20, ameliorated; 16, ineffective. The effective rate being 68%.

3.                       Acne: 50 cases of acne vulgaris were treated with this product with additives, 39 cases were cured; 8, markedly effective; 2, effective; 1 , ineffective. Generally, effects were revealed 3~9 days after medication. Most cases were markedly effective or cured after one course of treatment.
