Summary of Modern Studies on Guijiao Wenrun Oil (Sensual Lubricant™)

Chinese Use: Dyspareunia, trichomonal vaginitis.

The indications of this product include vaginal dryness, cold in the uterus, difficult coitus caused by yang deficiency of the liver-kidney. It is also applied in cold pain in the lower abdomen, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, leukorrhea caused by asthenic cold of the liver-kidney and impotence, vaginal trichomoniasis. The treating principles include warming yang, dispersing cold, activating blood flow, dredging collaterals, lubricating and arresting pruritus.

In the recipe, Cortex Cinnamomi is sweet-heat, can assist yang and invigorating fire, being the essential medicine for the treatment of weakness of fire of the vital gate. It also disperses cold, arrests pain, and is served as the monarchal ingredient. Fructus Evodiae is pungent-heat-bitter with dispersing and reducing and eliminating cold properties. It also warms the spleen, benefits the kidney, reinforces yang, arrests emission and eliminates cold, the actions of warming yang and eliminating cold can be strengthened. They are served as the ministerial ingredients. Rhizoma Zedoariae is pungent-bitter-warm with dispersing, reducing, dredging properties. It drastically activates blood, eliminates stasis, activates qi flowing, arrests pain, when used together with Flos Carthami which can activate, regulate menstruation, eliminate stasis, arrest pain, the actions of activating blood flow, dredging collaterals, arresting pain can be strengthened. Fructus Cnidii is pungent-bitter-warm, pertains to the kidney channel, capable of drying dampness, killing worms, arresting epilepsy, warming kidney, invigorating yang. Pericarpium Xanthoxyli is pungent-warm, pertains to the spleen-stomach-lung-kidney channels, capable of warming the kidney and the interior, dispersing cold, arresting pain, drying dampness and killing worms. When both are applied together, the actions of killing worms, arresting pruritus can be strengthened. Pericarpium Xanthoxyli also strengthens the actions of dispersing cold, and arresting pain of the monarchal ingredient. Tea oil can lubricate. All of the above are served as adjuvant and servant ingredients. The recipe yields the actions of warming yang, dispersing, activating blood, dredging collaterals, lubricating, and arresting pruritus.

Modern pharmacological studies reveal that Cortex Cinnamomi, Fructus Evodiae, Rhizoma Curculignis all possess anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation actions, Fructus Xanthoxyli, Fructus Cnidii all possess local anesthetic action. The latter also yields sex hormone action. Flos Carthami, Rhizoma Curculiginis strengthen humoral immunity. The extract of Fructus Cnidii and TCCM can block the conduction of sciatic nerve, with a penetrating capacity comparable to procaine. When injected intradermally, there is an action of infiltration anesthesiae. Subcutaneous injection of extract of Fructus Cnidii prolongs the coitus period, and shortens the intervals between coitus. It also yields androgenic action, increases the weight of prostatic gland, seminal vesicle, levatus ani muscle. Rhizoma Curculiginis strengthens humoral immunity, and also affects the endocrine function. Oil of Cortex Cinnamomi and cinamic aldehyde yield bacteriostatic action. Alcohol Evodii extract of Fructus or rutaecarpine hydrate, evodiamine, rutaelactone yield analgesic effect in rabbit. The decomposed product of rutaecarpine, rutine yields action for contraction of uterus. Decoction of Fructus Evodii and its water extract also yield inhibition on skin fungi. Tea oil is a matrix for its ointment form and serves as source material for injection. Thus the recipe yields synergistic action, and action of treating pudendal cold, difficult coitus, trichomonal vaginitis.
