Research Summary of Luma Zhuanggu (Solid Bone ) Capsules

Chinese Uses: osteoporosis-associated diseases such as hyperplastic rhachitis, cervical spondylosis, retrogression osteoarthritis, periarthritis of shoulder and rhermatic arthritis.

Modern studies on pharmacologic action prove that Luma Zhuanggu Capsule yields the following actions:

1. Prevention and cure on osteoporosis

1.1.To rat model with osteoporosis, this product improves the activity of estrogen and has the effect of prevention and cure on osteoporosis.

1.2 It reduces the sclerotic circulation rate by inhibiting osteolysis and stimulating skeleton growth. Under induction by extrogen it also inhibits growth of osteoclast of the experimental models by promoting thyroid gland cells secretion of calcitonin.

1.3 Apply with cultural method of ulna of mice fetus mice off 16 days. It decreases the number of osteoclast of the long bone and increases of hypertrophic chondrocyte.

2. Enhancement on immunologic function

2.1 It remarkably increases content of Ig in the blood serum of normal mice , mice immunized with sheep erythrocyte, or those with syndrome of yang deficiency. It also prolongs the survival time of the antibody.

2.2 It increases the weight of important organs of mice with syndrome of yang deficiency

3. Anti-inflammatory action

3.1 It has the role of anti-inflammatory action on rat model of air sac granuloma, paw swelling induced by carrageenan, and granuloma formation caused by cotton pellets as well.

3.2 It inhibits ear swelling of mice induced by Xylene and decreases the exudation of Evans Blue in the abdominal cavity.

4. Analgesic effect

It improves the pain threshold on the hot plate and prolongs the emergence time of writhing response induced by acetic acid.

5. Anti-stress

It prolongs the swimming time of mice under the circumstance of weight loading at high temperature (40 ± 0.5 ℃ ) as we;; as low temperature (12 ± 0.5 ℃ )l. It also it improves the survival time under the condition of normal pressure and hypoxia.

Studies on toxicology

ZhuangGu Granule was administrated to mice in the dose of 250g/kg (corresponding to the maximum capacity of intragastric administration ), two times per day. Observe for 7 days and no case was found dead and abnormal, which revealed that its LD 50 was over 250g/kg by oral administration.

Clinically, this product is commonly used in osteoporosis-associated diseases such as hyperplastic rhachitis, cervical spondylosis, retrogression osteoarthritis, periarthritis of shoulder and rhermatic arthritis.

1. 183 cases with osteoporosis associated diseases, including 49 cases with hyperplastic rhachitis, 31 cases with cervical spondylosis, and 64 cases with retrogression osteoarthritis were administrated with this product, 4 capsules 3 times a day continuously for one or two months. According to statistics, the total effective rate was 81.97%, including 102 cases basically recovered (55.73%0, 48 cases improved (26.23%), and 33 cases ineffective (18.03%).

2. 64 females at menopausal age with osteoporosis and concomitant fracture were administrated with this product. Cases applied with this product had a quicker union of fracture than those in the control group by one or two weeks.

3. 101 cases with periarthritis of shoulder and rheumatic arthritis were administrated with this product, 4 capsules 3 times a day continuously for one month. According to statistics after one or two courses of treatment, the total effective rate was 90.10%, including 34 cases basically recovered (33.66%), 57 cases improved (56.44%), and 10 cases ineffective (9.90%).
